Air Toxics Are Pollutin U.S. Waters
======================================
Air toxics are a major source of pollution in the Great Lakes, Lake
Champlain, the Chesapeake Bay and other U.S. coastal waters, according
to a recently released EPA report.
Air pollution in the Great Lakes is a factor that leads many states to
issue advisory warnings against fish eating, when the animals are found
to contain PCBs, mercury and dioxins.
In the Chesapeake Bay, the accumulation of airborne nitrogen dioxide is
a significant contributor to water-pollutin problems. Nitrogen in the bay
causes excessve algal growth, which leads to reduced oxygen levels in the
water, which is harmful to fish and shellfish.
Copies of the report, "Deposition of Air Pullutants to the Great Waters,
Second Report to Congress" (EPA-453/R-97-011), are available through
EPA's Air and Radiation Docket and Information Center (Docket Number
A-97-21) at (202) able on the World Wide Web at htt://www.epa.gov/oar/oaqps/
