KOSHA-Service associations focusing on preventing accidents in the restaurant and building management sectors

Public and private joint project begins to focus on reducing occupational accidents such as slips and trips of the restaurant workers including nutritionists and building management workers such as security guards, facility managers and building cleaners.

KOSHA, in cooperation with the service sector associations, supports the restaurant and building management sectors within the service industry which witnesses the highest occupational accident cases next to the manufacturing industry.

This is especially targeting the two sectors because they reported 6,995 and 4,000 cases of occupational accidents respectively which are higher than other sectors in the service industry in terms of ratio and the number of injury deaths per 10,000 persons

On the backdrop, KOSHA supports accidents prevention activities for workers in the large-scale restaurants and hospitals’ kitchen, through the Korean Dietetic Association.

-      The agency also conducts risk assessment for the building management Improvement, through dispatched staff members of the Korea Housing Managers Association and the Korea Association of building Management which are consultative bodies that deal with building hygiene outsourcing and apartment complex management.

To that end, each occupational group in the service industry selected around 170 staff workers who either majored in occupational safety or have national technology license to improve the efficiency of prevention activities. The staff workers would have a launching ceremony on the 28th March at Legend Hotel in Dae-joen to embark on their activities.

Through these occupational groups, KOSHA targets 40,000 enterprises to provide technological support on dangerous facilities and equipment, give safe education for field workers and distribute accidents prevention materials.

Also, KOSHA supports fiscal aid to them if their facilities need to be improved for occupational safety and health, based on KOSHA’s assessment.

President Hun-ki Baek said “The injuries reduced by over 3,400 in the service industry last year alone as KOSHA has been focusing on reducing accident cases in the service industry since 2010, adding that the intensive support for the restaurant and building management sectors would be the driving force to reduce the whole occupational accidents.”
